7 Steps to Buying a Home
The Seventh Step
Moving Checklist
It
is never too early to begin planning your move. Veteran movers
have found that a comprehensive timetable and checklist is the best
strategy to ensure a smooth move. It is also a great way to involve
the entire family in the move. As weeks pass your checklist will
help insure that nothing has been overlooked. You will feel a
sense of accomplishment as items are checked off your list.
Four weeks before you move:
Get
estimates from moving companies or check on price of rental trucks.
Start to use up things you can’t move such as frozen foods or
hazardous/ flammable materials. Contact the IRS or your accountant for
information on what moving expenses maybe tax deductible..
Take
an inventory of your possessions. Are there items that you don’t
want to move? Consider holding a garage sale or make arrangements to
donate them to a charitable organization. Make a list of everyone
you need to notify about your move friends, relatives, creditors, subscriptions,
professionals, etc.
Locate
all important papers you will need to carry with you like insurance
policies, auto registration, etc. Contact insurance companies
and arrange for coverage in your new home. Purchase packing material
and start packing things you won’t be needing for the next four
weeks.
If moving out of the area:
Contact
the chamber of commerce in your new area for information on your new
city. If you are moving at your employers request, check what expenses
and responsibilities are theirs and which are yours. Locate all
important papers you will need to carry with you like insurance policies
auto registration, etc. Contact schools, doctors, dentists, lawyers,
accountants, veterinarians and obtain copies of your personal records.
Ask for referrals in your new town. If you will need a storage
unit in your new area make arrangements now. Obtain a change of
address kit from the post office and begin filling out cards.
