7 Steps to Buying a Home
The Seventh Step
Moving Checklist
Three weeks before you move:
Continue packing.
If moving out of the area:
Arrange
to open a bank account in your new area. Your current bank should
be able to give a referral. Mark travel arrangements if you know
nothing will delay your moving day. If selling your current home
it is not wise to make reservations for hotels as sometimes escrow will
be delayed a few days and you may not be able to get a refund.
Two weeks before you move:
Continue
packing. Arrange to have your utilities turned off at your old
home and turned on at your new home. You might request that they
be turned off at your old home the day after you move out. I have
seen people ask for them to be turned off at 5:00 p.m. on moving day
and they were shut off at 6:00 a.m.
Two weeks before you move:
Continue
to pack. Have your car serviced if you will be traveling a long
distance.
One week before you move:
Get
serious with packing. Drain gas and oil from power equipment such
as lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc. Give
away plants not being moved.
If moving out of the area:
Pick
up dry cleaning, return library books, return any borrowed items, collect
any items you have loaned to other people. Withdraw contents of
safety deposit box at your bank and obtain cashiers check for moving
company and purchase travelers checks.
