7 Steps to Buying a Home

The Seventh Step
Packing Tips

Use boxes that have tops. Be sure to tape the bottom of the boxes and the top after you are finished. Be sure to mark what is in the box and what room it goes in.

We suggest you use plain white paper or packing peanuts for packing. If you use newspaper the ink will come off on your things and you will have to wash everything when you unpack. We are sure you will have enough other things to do.

Pack heavy items like books, canned food and tools in small boxes. Pack light things like pillows, blankets, sheets, towels, shoes, etc, in large boxes. Pack everything else in medium boxes. You might want to use some of your blankets to wrap around fragile items like lamps or pictures.

We suggest you use dishpacks for your dishes, but medium boxes can be used if need be. When packing dishes wrap each piece in a piece of paper. Stand plates on their end. Place glasses standing with the lip down. Pack your dishes tight. If there are empty spaces wad a piece of paper and fill in the empty spaces. Just make sure that your dishes and other fragile items can not move around in the box. When you finish and you tape the top of the box pick it up and shake it slightly, if you hear anything rattle around we suggest you open the box and fill in any spaces with a piece of waded paper.

We suggest you pack items like stereos, VCR’s, DVD’s, and computers in their original boxes if you have them. If not put them in a medium carton. You might want to wrap some blankets around them for extra protection.

Never pack the following items as they are flammable and could explode or catch fire in a hot moving van: any aerosol cans, caustic drain cleaners, gasoline, charcoal lighter fluid, paint, paint thinner, varnishes, oil, matches, or any other flammable or combustible items.

Always pack an essentials box. This box should include things you will probably need at your new home right away. Things you might put in this box would include a few tools, toilet paper, hand soap, hand towel or paper towels, Kleenex, light bulbs in case a light at your new home is burned out, a radio, medication, bandaids, snacks, pet food, cups, water, telephone, pen and paper, and anything else you can think of that you might need right away. Put this box in your car if possible or put it on the truck last so it will come off first.
