Tips for doing a Garage Sale
You might want to have a garage sale before you move to get rid of some things you do not want to take with you to your new home. We have put together this guide to help you have a great sale.
At least a month before you move decide what you want to sell at your sale. Set it aside. Bargain with your kids to get rid of old toys they do not play with anymore.
Choose a date for your sale. Saturdays are best if you are planning to do it for only one day. If you want to do two days Friday and Saturday are better than Saturday and Sunday. If you do not have a lot of items to sell see if a friend or neighbor has some things to sell and wants to join in on the sale with you, then you can split the cost of advertising.
Advertise your sale. Does your community have a free ads newspaper? Post bright signs at major intersections around your neighborhood with arrows for directions, address, and time frame.
Plan to have change for your sale. Also, wear some type of fanny pack to keep the money in, you do not want to leave it lying around in a cashbox for someone to take off when you are distracted.
You do not have to put price tags on your items but it is helpful. You can pick up bright dot stickers at an office supply store. Be realistic with your prices, people are out to find a bargain it’s more of a treasure hunt hobby for people. If there is something you feel is worth a lot more than you could get at a garage sale see if there are any consignment stores in your area that you could take it to and get what you feel it is worth to you. People will bargain you down, do not be insulted, you do not have to take the offer, just say “no I can’t do that”. Most of all be flexible.
Try to have a companion that can watch your things when you need to use the restroom and to also watch people that they don't’ try to steal anything ( It can happen, especially small items).
Have some grocery bags on hand for people to carry their purchases in.
You may want to record the items bought in separate columns with the names of whose items were sold and the price it sold for. This is good when you are sharing a sale with neighbors or friends, also kids like to know how much they made on their things.
After the sale take down your signs and count your money!
